Quitting Is Sometimes Good

Category : Divorce Ritual

One of the divorce rituals in my upcoming book is about quitting one  thing when your divorce goes through.  It can be a lot of different things that you can choose to quit.  A habit you been trying to kick for a while like smoking.  An addiciton to shopping.  Making an attempt to eat less sugar.  Or, it can be a way that you conduct your life like trying to think less negatively.

Think of it like New Year’s Eve and the resolutions you make.  These can be your divorce resolutions!  I don’t suggest trying to bite off more than you can chew.  Just take one bad habit at a time.  Don’t try too much at once or you won’t end up accomplishing your goal.  Move one mountain at a time.  You will see some results that way the quickest.

What is something tha t you would like to quit?

Racing To The Altar

Category : Break-Up, Favorite Articles

We have all heard of the stories of women racing to the altar. The reasons of why they rush are varied — age, biological clock is ticking, girlfriends are all married, etc. I am sure some marriages end up working under these conditions. However, an article I read recently discusses a new study that showed that 30 % of women who are now divorced knew it was wrong from the very beginning.

“Women are raised with an unrealistic impression of what love is supposed to look like,” says Denver-based therapist Jennifer Gauvain. “Girls read fairy tales where the woman gets saved by the prince, and when they’re older, the same message is enforced through romantic comedies where love always prevails, despite impossible scenarios. So women learn that love can always work, even when it’s unhealthy.”

Gauvain goes on to say that the biological clock does play a role in women’s minds. “The number 30 reads like an expiration date for unmarried women,” she says. “Not only are your baby-making years racing by, but you’re leaving behind your 20s – a decade of experimentation, one-night stands, and making mistakes, professionally and personally. In the next decade, you’re seen as an adult and can’t do those things.”

While many women are so focused on the wedding day and the preparation leading up to it, they forget about the reason they are getting married in the first place. “Women often forget that marriage isn’t just about a big wedding,” says Allison Moir-Smith, author of Emotionally Engaged. “It’s also about evolving from being single to married. That’s a big thing to deal with.”

Buzz Aldrin Files For Divorce

Buzz Aldrin and his wife of twenty three years Lois Driggs Cannon are headed for divorce. Buzz’s attorney listed “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split in papers filed in California.

Buzz is a legend who was one of the first men on the moon along with Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong. He was most recently on “Dancing With the Stars” and “30 Rock.”

I’m shocked that he is getting a divorce at 81 years old. At that age and after twenty three years together, do you think he should have just stayed in the marriage or is age never a factor?

Happily Watching “Happily Divorced”

Category : Celebrity, Television

Last night, I watched the premiere of Fran Drescher’s new sitcom “Happily Divorced.” REALLY cute show! On the show, Fran has been married to the same guy for 18 years only to have him tell her in bed that he is gay. “But we just had sex during Leno,” Fran says. “How gay can you be?”

This sitcom actually mirrors Fran’s real-life as that is exactly what happened to her with her ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson. In the series, she and her husband still continue to live together while getting a divorce because he cannot afford to get his own place. This of course allows lots of opportunities for great comedic action. But it also raises the question, under what circumstances could you live with your ex?

“Happily Divorced” airs on TV Land Wednesday nights (10:30 Eastern and Pacific; 9:30 Central). Don’t miss it! To watch Fran, Jacobson and her co-star John Michael Higgins in a recent TV interview on “Joy Behar” promoting the show click here.

Dual Divorce Party

Karen Elson and Jack White Are Divorcing — With a Party!

It seems that joint divorce parties are becoming just as popular as single ones.  If you can’t beat ’em join ‘em.   A couple of weeks ago we wrote an article about a wealthy married couple in New York City who were throwing their own dual divorce bash.  Now, model Karen Elson and her soon to be ex-husband musician Jack White are ringing in their six-year wedding anniversary and their new divorce anniversary on the same day with all of their friends in Nashville!  I have one question…do they cut the divorce cake together and then feed it to each other?

They released the following statement:

We remain dear and trusted friends and co-parents to our wonderful children Scarlett and Henry Lee. We feel so fortunate for the time we have shared and the time we will continue to spend both separately and together watching our children grow. In honor of that time shared, we are throwing a divorce party. an evening together in Nashville to re-affirm our friendship and celebrate the past and future with close friends and family.

Superman Single?

Category : Celebrity, Divorce Attorney

Rumors are swirling around the comic book world that Superman and Lois Lane are headed for a divorce.  With a lot of changes occurring at DC comics they are looking to revamp the series and hinting at a possible break-up.  I have a few questions.  Is Lois getting divorced from Superman or Clark Kent?  Will she get the Fortress of Solitude in the split?  Will she date Lex Luthor just to piss him off?  I heard that Lois is in talks with Maria Schriver’s divorce attorney.  (Kidding)

Here is the report from MSNBC:

Last month, comic book publishing giant DC Comics caused a small media uproar when Superman renounced his U.S. citizenship in the Action Comics #900 issue. At the time, Newsarama wondered how long the change would even be relevant, since a major summer comic series called “Flashpoint” was promising to change the DC Universe, the publisher’s fictional world.

The controversy regarding the status of Superman’s citizenship may indeed be short-lived, as the question of the Man of Steel’s marital status seems poised to take center stage this fall.

While DC hasn’t confirmed or commented on the situation at the time of publication, questions are beginning to emerge within the comics community as to whether Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s 15-year marriage will survive the publisher’s post-“Flashpoint” revamp of their core comic book line in September.

Wow!  Who’s next?  Fred and Wilma Flinstone?  Popeye and Olive Oil?  (Or, wait, were they ever married?) Anyway, for the list of reasons why Superman may be single by the Fall, check out the article with Superman experts chiming in by clicking here

If this goes through I want to throw Lois Lane a divorce party.  Do you think they will get divorced?

This week marks the 20th Anniversary of director Spike Lee’s controversial film Jungle Fever. The movie tells the story of a married African-American man named Flipper (played by Wesley Snipes) who has an affair with his female Italian-American co-worker Angie (played by Annabella Sciorra) from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. When this relationship gets revealed Flipper’s wife throws him out of the house and Angie’s strict old-school Italian father (played by Frank Vincent) is so livid,  that he actually beats her up in an emotional and heartwrenching scene.

If you haven’t seen the film, it’s definitely one to watch.  A cast of true acting talent that includes, Anthony Quinn, Samuel L. Jackson, Halle Berry, Queen Latifah, Tim Robbins, John Turturro, Michael Imperioli and Debi Mazar, among others.  Lee brings the drama of a cheating husband to the audience in a realistic way.  The added interracial complications between the families really heighten the drama.

In 1991, Jungle Fever had everyone talking at the time.  The movies ends with Flipper actually going back to his wife.  We never know if they end up getting a divorce or if they stayed together.  There’s no Jungle Fever 2, so do you think they lasted as a couple in movieland? Can a married couple really last through cheating?

The complications with the interracial aspect of the relationship in the film is so different twenty years later.   Now there are countless successful interracial marriages in the public eye, including Lamar Odom and Khloe Kardashian, Seal and Heidi Klum, Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel, David Bowie and Iman, among others. It’s also not just black and white, but other ethnicities like Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos and legendary couples in history like John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
