Wow, just looked on YouTube for divorce parties. There are so many of them! Looks like this concept is really becoming main stream. It is exciting because I know and many of you know that they really help both with healing and closure. You can participate in lots of rituals that will help. They can be as ex bashing as you want or as celebratory of you in your new role and your journey.
I would love to hear from people who have actually had parties. What was the best part? The most difficult part? The most healing thing that you actually did?
Let me know.
In my new book The Divorce Ritual, I talk about the divorce party I threw when my first marriage was over. Someone called me recently to ask what they could do to make their divorce party fun . I immediately said, “Have everyone dress up!” She replied, “Do you mean black tie?” “No,” I said. “Have them dress up in costume.” Halloween doesn’t have to come once a year, right? Have fun anytime with a divorce costume party!
In my soon-to-be-released book The Divorce Ritual I suggest lots of ideas for throwing a divorce party, including a costume party. The theme of this event is for everyone to dress up as a famous (can also be infamous) person. At a first glance a few people will come to mind, but as you think more and more this game of finding someone to dress up as really gets to be fun. Here are five fun ideas for men below. Tune in Thursday for the list of women! Who would you dress up as?
FAMOUS DIVORCED MEN
A big thanks to everyone for all of the positive feedback on Twiiter and this blog about my book cover for “The Divorce Ritual” (pictured above). As always, I deeply appreciate your continued support on this endeavor. I am very proud to announce that my trailer for the book is now available for viewing! If you’re wondering what an divorce ritual is…we answer that question and much more in this unique video It also shows the inner-workings of a divorce party as we filmed it during an event for Christine a truly wonderful and strong recent divorcee. She decided to move on and not look back…and nothing says, “I’m not looking back” like a divorce party. We shot the video along the Venice Beach canals in California. Cocktails were flowing. The crowd was excited. The divorcee was smiling. Nothing could have been better!
I hope you enjoy the trailer and look forward to your feedback. You can watch it by clicking here.
Divorce parties are one of the most popular things going right now. Sure someone gets divorced in the process, but why not have a touch of fun and humor when it’s all overwith! This is a FABULOUS way to just let go of all of the stress and tension and kick off the start to your new life.
A great added joy (besides you getting rid of your ex) for all of the guests at your divorce party is the divorce party favor. This is chance where you can get really creative and have a few laughs with your friends by your side. I have been looking around at party favors and while the Absolute Vodka is absolutely essential for those tasty cosmos, there are some other goodies that can certainly help set the tone in a humorous way. The party favor above “Happy Trails: Dirty Bastard Lip Balm” is great for a couple of reasons. First, your friends are going to laugh . Second, you can keep your lips nice and moist to kiss that new special someone in your new life. So rub some on, pucker up and say goodbye to your old life and a big hello to your new one. No kissing and making up with your ex. Kiss him off! Pucker up and prepare to move ahead!!

I threw a divorce party recently for a client and it was a blast! There was lots of humor and healing during a great afternoon along the canals in Venice Beach, California.
One of the reasons my divorce parties are unique from others is because of the rituals that my divorcees perform during each event. Not only do they bring structure to the party, but they offer a sort of do-it-yourself divorce detox. Each ritual performed gives way to more and more healing for the divorcee — the notion of moving on (and not looking back)! I am always amazed at how much other guests, who are divorced but didn’t have a divorce party, also feel a sense of healing and closure after being at a friends divorce party.
One of the rituals that is always a hit, and a personal fave of mine, is Fly Fly Away. I covered it months ago on my blog, but I have some new photos of this ritual being performed that I am excited to share with you! There will be more rituals in my upcoming book, The Divorce Ritual, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, here are the steps below for Fly Fly Away:
Step 1) On small pieces of paper, the divorcee should write all of the things she disliked about her ex.
Step 2) On small pieces of paper the guests should write down all of the wonderful things that they want for the divorcee’s new life.
Step 3) Everybody should roll up the little pieces of paper and put them into the balloons.
Step 4) Blow up the balloons and tie a string around each one.
Step 5) The divorcee should go outside with everyone at the party and let the balloons go into the sky (as pictured above).
Champagne to a divorce is just about as important as the divorce decree! If you are planning a divorce party this summer, Moet has just made things even cooler (literally). Introducing the first-ever champagne served with ice — Moet Ice Imperial. Since your marriage is no longer on the rocks, put the champagne on it!
Served in a stylish white and gold bottle, it has a blend of pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay with notes of tropical fruits such as mango and guava, sweet spices like licorice, red fruits and peppermint. Wow, I am getting thirsty already. At that sassy divorce party in the Hamptons this summer, this will be the must-have drink to cool your Manolo heels!
It seems that divorce parties are in the air. If you’re planning one for yourself or a friend, a festive cake will be in order. Hopefully, you got a nice “piece of the pie” in the divorce, so a celebratory cake is the natural next step. Just like you cut the wedding cake on your wedding day, you need to do the same at your divorce party with all of your friends looking on. And, for some reason, this cake will taste that much better now the divorce is final.
Taglines on these cakes should always be fun like, “Free At Last!” “See Ya and Wouldn’t Wanna Be Ya,” “Divorce Is The New Marriage” and the list goes on and on. What would you put on your frosted feast? Tell us!

It seems that joint divorce parties are becoming just as popular as single ones. If you can’t beat ’em join ‘em. A couple of weeks ago we wrote an article about a wealthy married couple in New York City who were throwing their own dual divorce bash. Now, model Karen Elson and her soon to be ex-husband musician Jack White are ringing in their six-year wedding anniversary and their new divorce anniversary on the same day with all of their friends in Nashville! I have one question…do they cut the divorce cake together and then feed it to each other?
They released the following statement:
We remain dear and trusted friends and co-parents to our wonderful children Scarlett and Henry Lee. We feel so fortunate for the time we have shared and the time we will continue to spend both separately and together watching our children grow. In honor of that time shared, we are throwing a divorce party. an evening together in Nashville to re-affirm our friendship and celebrate the past and future with close friends and family.
